So here goes: Choose A Date: Obviously you have to have some idea of when you want to go on your next cruise. My family usually goes Thanksgiving or Spring Break or Special Occasion like 40th Wedding Anniversary. Be flexable with your weeks and see if the Cruise Line, Cruise Ship, Destinations are available for that time frame. If so, check the rates and make a decision on actual week for the cruise. If you find a really special deal on a cruise rate, obviously that is your week. Book Early: If you book a cruise early, you usually get the best rates and or perks. However, it does not matter. If the rates go down and you have not paid in full yet, you can have your fares reduces in most cases. I check my rates on the cruises I book two or three times a week. Especially when I get the 120 emails from the cruise company saying they have a new awesome deal. The reality is my rates originally books is still the best value. Flights: If you have to fly to the cruise port, research your airfare first. You might get a great cruise deal to find out you have to pay a premium for your transportation to the port. Most airlines allow you 24 hours to cancel your flights if booked online with full refunds. When you book a cruise they usually ask for a refundable deposit. This allows you to lock in the cruise first then gain your airfare. Doing both well in advance is the best way to save time, effort and money. Simple Rule: If you like stress, screwing up the first day or so of your very expensive vacation; then feel free to book your flights the day of the cruise leaving. You think if you book your flight with the cruise line; your flight is late; they hold the boat for you? NOPE. They are obligated to get you to the first port so the first few days of your vacation is screwed. The alternative is fly in the day before and get a cheap hotel by the port. Don't be an idiot, fly in the day before. Don't ask peoples opinions, fly in the day before. Those people won't help you when you miss your sailing. Cruise Brand On-Line Check-In: OK, you got your flights, you got your cruise so you are ready to go, nope. Do the online check-in right NOW! So many posts happen where folks forgot to get a passport renewed; visa or some other key thing. They get to the cruise ship and are denied. So do you need a passport, YES. Always, be prepared always. Do you need a Visa, maybe know your needs NOW not the week before. Is your passport expiring with in a few months of your cruise departure, get it renewed NOW. The Cruise On-Line Check in helps you through this process. DO IT NOW! Make a Calendar: I uses either both my Outlook and create a custom Excel Calendar. Now I am getting into the finer points of why folk tell me I am insane. With most of my cruises, the cruise lines pack the ships to capacity. If you shopped well and booked your cruise early, you have some perks like specialty restaurants. Most cruise have free style dinning which still needs a reservation in most cases. Then on the larger cruise ships, many of the shows you need a reservation for or specialty shows that you pay extra for if you want to attend. Finally, you look at the excursions you want to take date and time. So here is what I do. 120 days before you cruise, you can make the reservations for specialty Restaurants; Specialty Shows; Ship shows and Excursions. Match the Show times to your dinner reservations; match your dinner reservation to the excursion you are going to take; blend your restaurant choices around the variety you want during the week. Seem complicated. It is far less complicated and frustrating doing it NOW, then just taking your chances on-board. Get Your Family Involved: So I get my entire family to my home for dinner 120 days before the cruise. I give them all the list of Restaurants; Dinner shows; and Ship shows with potential dates/time. We vote on which restaurant when; which show when and which excursion when. I take the decision and handle them immediately online. This upcoming cruise I have 5 in my party. Getting tables for five is a hard ticket. However I have never had an issue when doing it right as the 120 day window opens. Don't wait for the last minute. Know Your Drink Package & Internet Plan: If you get a perk of drink packages or internet there is always a catch. No free lunch here, just the way it is. Know what is covered and what is not. For example, many perk drink packages limit the amount of the drink to $15. 00 or less. Even though the package is a perk, the cruise company charge you tips per person, per day. Don't get mad, just the way it is. I ALWAYS upgrade my drink package if available to the better one. It cost me a couple of hundred dollars per passenger. On NCL I take my Premium Drink Package and upgrade online to the Premium "PLUS" drink package. Now, at least on NCL, I get unlimited bottled water; energy drinks; specialty coffee's; selected bottles of wine at meals that I can take back to my cabin; and no limit on my drink price (with just a few exceptions). This is just the way my wife and I roll on drink packages. The internet if a perk is usually 250 minutes. I ALWAYS upgrade to Unlimited with Streaming. Do I need it, probably not however if I do, it is always there. Remember, even unlimited streaming wifi on a cruise ship totally sucks. How is that for establishing an expectation. I make these decisions and pay for them upfront and online. TIPS: Most Cruise Brands add the tips in upfront and you pay them when you pay your balance. This is a great idea and makes sure that the great staff that works with you is properly compensated. However, if you have a wine steward ($25. 00); Butler ($100. 00); Concierge ($50. 00); they are not covered so bring the appropriate cash with you. Don't stiff them. Now for the items I get the most heat on, tipping bar tenders and bar servers by the pool. On day one, find your favorite bar; meet your bar tender and slip him a $20. 00. Introduce your family to him/her. Do the same thing with the pool servers except slip them a $5. Keep single dollars with you so bring $100 or so for extra. Should you have do do this, NO. Will it significantly improve your time/service during your cruise, YES in a big way. Send An Email To the Cruise Customer Service Department: I tend to always go suite class now that I am older. In NCL it is called the Haven. with MSC it is called the Yacht Club. Regardless of your class of service, you can send the cruise company information on special requests. I use a CPAP so they have a cord and water for me waiting when I arrive. If you have food issues or allergies; tell them. I must have 10 things I ask them for prior to every cruise. I also write a letter to my Butler and Cabin Steward which I give them when I first meet them. Thinks like preferred snacks; getting every single "For Sale/Extra cost" item out of the cabin; trading the complementary champagne for wine; and the list goes on. Wonder why my cruise review are so perfect, now you know the reason. It take work so I can have the vacation I and my family want, pay for and deserve. Have a question, ask it.
